Re: Success of clomid...

Hi Kim and Jess,

My experience with clomid is over 18 years ago, so I don't really remember how it affected me. I know it took several cycles and increased dosage before I finally did ovulate. I think this was back before the ovulation predictor kits were available.....at least that us middle-lower income people could afford. I only know for certain because my daughter was finally conceived on clomid. (She is 17 1/2 now.)

When I went thru infertility the second time around, clomid didn't work for me. I had irregular periods and "felt" pregnant much of the time because the hormone levels were such a mess from PCOS. Again, this was still in the dinosaur days of PCOS knowledge and treatment. I was diagnosed by laparoscopy.......I even saw the color glossy photos....interesting, actually....the ovaries with PCOS tend to look much like blobs of tapioca pudding.

After several attempts with clomid, I went to a fertility specialist and was put on pergonal. This is the drug that was such a sensation in the early and mid 1980s, with the multiple births. Because they had also recently realized that PCOS often leaves women with even lower levels of the one hormone, metrodin was added to the pergonal. I think it was a total of four cycles where I would see maybe one or two eggs, but no where near the dozens the press kept informing us about! After a break of nearly 10 months, plus another laparoscopy, we tried one more cycle. This time, I conceived my son. The egg wasn't nearly the size the doctor had been hoping for....I hyperstimulated and ended up in the hospital with dangerously enlarged cysts on the ovaries....but this was also the cycle I finally conceived. My son is a healthy nine year old now.

I can't say you'll have the same experiences I had. I wish I could make such a promise.....I know several women who have had babies....and several others who never became pregnant. In some ways, you have a better chance of having a baby than women of my generation did. Medicine has finally realized PCOS is NOT all in our heads or a matter of weight.....and discoveries on treating it are making it possible for some women to become pregnant even after the high powered injectibles had failed!

I'm afraid all I can do is offer you some hope......and let you know you're in my prayers, and you have a shoulder to lean on....cry on....or just someone to listen to you. *HUG*

Best wishes, dear cysters.

Hugs

Shelley
