Re: Thyroid & PCOS (To Sue - Sorry a bit long)

Sue,

post-partum thryoid problems are indeed common and it should be checked. IN many, but not all cases, this resolves (recovers) by itself after the birth.

Talking about the exercise - in retrospect I had the same thing with sweating. I could exercise for one hour and not sweat, even though I did get red in the face. Now, with thryoid replacement, I definitely sweat when I exercise. Other possible symptoms (I had all of the following) were feeling cold all the time (even when other people were not), low exercise endurance, fatigue (feeling like your legs are full of lead, or that you are walking through treacle) - walking up stairs was hell, poor aerobic fitness (out of breath easily), depression (without any real reason), feeling tired even after a good night's sleep....., the fatigue worse in the afternoons, weight gain, or extreme difficulty to lose weight....

Again, the Mary Shomon site is very good for listing symptoms.

Tere is also some good information on subclinical hypothyroid (ie. tests are within normal range, but the patient does have hypothryoid symptoms)- if you really go searching. I remember reading that nowdays doctors often only treat on the basis of the blood test results and do not pay much attention to symptoms, whereas in the past they would treat more on the basis or resolving symptoms. I personally believe that resolution of symptoms is just as important as the blood test results because what is normal for one person may not be normal for another. My hypothyroid was within the'subclinical' range (top TSH was about 5.2 - which was dismissed as normal until I found my current doctor) - but I very clearly had all the symptoms - which were dismissed by previous doctors because they considered the blood tests normal. Am on about 50% replacement with T4 hormone, based on body weight now. After starting treatment it took 4 months to get to a dose that I felt really good at. I have now felt mostly good for nearly 10 months - like a new person, literally.

No one should have to suffer from something that can it most cases be so easily treated (with dramatic impact on well-being), but is so often overlooked.

Actually, I hope this is what it is for you - so it can be easily treated.

Best wishes and hope all works out for you.

Sally
