Newly diagnosed

I recently had an annual exam including a pelvic ultrasound due to heavy periods and break-through bleeding between periods. My doctor had a follow up visit to tell me she believes I have PCOS due to the cysts, my bleeding, and my blood tests showed my female hormones in an abnormal ratio. I am also overweight with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a fast heart rate. I figured the overweight had a lot to do with the bp, cholesterol and heart rate.

My question is, is it possible for this to just develop when you are older (I am 41), and without some of the more obvious symptoms? I am going to discuss further with my doctor, but wanted to see what feedback I get here as well. I'm not sure if I need to worry about this or not (I kind of think my doctor is wrong).
