Hi!

Living in the Atlanta area, your sister should have a much better opportunity to find a specialist willing to work with her and address her concerns. However, as we all know, FINDING the specialist whom you not only feel comfortable with, but really IS interested in researching and doing extra work to discover the best way to treat a particular patient is very difficult. Since I'm from Indiana, I can't recommend anyone....however I will ask my sister if she's heard of anyone. (She lives in Lawrenceville, near Atlanta).

Some women have reported success with the Glucophage XR (extended release) when they had the severe side effects with the "regular" kind. So far, I haven't really been able to comfortably go on with my life on either of them....they make my irritable bowel flare up and with my very busy lifestyle and communting everywhere, I can't tolerate these inconveniences for any length of time in hopes they would go away after a while.

Some women, who haven't been able to use Glucophage, have switched to Avandia or Actos. However, I've also heard these two meds tend to make one gain a few more pounds. Although these ladies weren't thrilled with even MORE weight, they did mostly report that they felt much better overall.

Spironolactone or Aldactone are just two names of medicines commonly given to address the excess hair. It won't stop the growth of what is already there, but it should help prevent or limit new hair growth. Hair already growing in unwanted areas will have to be addressed with the usual hair removal techniques, electrolysis, or laser. Myself, after taking spironolactone for about six weeks, I noticed that the jawline hair as well as the hair on my legs seemed finer and much less dark. The hair on my legs had previously been very dark and coarse, growing two per follicle. After taking the med, I noticed the leg hair no longer grew this way...now it is one per follicle, a light brown, and much finer in texture.

As for the weight thing...some women are able to have success with the lower carb diets and excersize.

Give your sister a hug from all of us.....let her know, we're here to encourage her!

Hugs,

Shelley

My sister has PCOS and has been diagnosed for several years. She is only 23. However, she tried Glucophage and the side affects were worse, diarrhea & vomiting. I'd like to help her but am at a loss as to what to do. She would like to be able to take something that would help with the obesity and facial hair and irregular menstruation. Fertility is not a high concern for her.

Is there anything prescribed or over the counter that has been successful even moderately in addressing her concerns?

Additionally, we are in Atlanta, Georgia is there a recommend Doctor or practice that anyone has had good experience with?

Thank you for any help or suggestions.
