Re: The smaller symptoms

Renee,

You mentioned you'd lost 40 pounds, originally. I know that my cycles weren't always messed up when I was younger...teens thru early 20's. My daughter, now 17, also shows signs of PCOS but she has very regular cycles. Because of her age and regularity, the family doctor isn't concerned about treating her other than suggesting she follow a sensible diet and excersize program.

Like you, I had lost about 50 pounds five years ago. This was when I was first put on Glucophage. I lost this weight without changing much of anything and, from what I remember, without severe side effects. However, once I had lost the weight...whether it was from additional stress of divorce, single mom, working full time, going to school full time, AND trying to have a social life...I started having severe side effects and eventually gave up on Glucophage. I"ve tried numerous times to restart using the XR kind, but the irritable bowel flares up very easily and I stop the med again.

When I had lost the weight, I had very regular periods for the first time in many years. As I regained the weight, after stopping the Glucophage, my cycles began to skip all over the place. I am now 42 and it's slightly possible I'm in pre-menopause, as my mother said she started having similar messed up cycles about this age.

As for the cystic ovaries...mine were diagnosed during the two laparoscopies for infertility in 1989 and 1991. (I even got to see the color glossy photos! Looks something like tapioca pudding.)

I know some women have reported having some success with the lower carb diets, as long as they are careful not to go too low on carbs. However, from what I've read, the main suspect link of PCOS is related to insulin resistance and it seems most specialists, who really try to stay up-to-date on the PCOS discoveries, seem to agree that this is best addressed with some kind of insulin sensitizer....Glucophage (metformin), Actos, or Avandia. (In the USA, Rezulin was taken off the market a year or so ago.)

As I've read these boards the couple of years I've been reading them, I've noticed that there are no SET RULES of symptoms for PCOS. That's why so many doctors have been telling us "it's all in your head" all these years, why so many are still living in the dark ages and denying it exists at all, and why....even when a doctor really tries to discover what is causing a woman's problems...it is often so difficult to diagnose. Although it seems most women struggle with weight gain and retention, there ARE women who are underweight, and one specialist who spoke at our local chapter said these thinner cysters are actually at higher risk for certain health things than us "fluffier" gals.

If your insurance covers it, I'd say go for the testing....that way you'll know, you'll be better armed with information to figure out what best way to attack this for YOU.

Best wishes!

Hugs,

Shelley

I just wanted to see if there was anyone out there who has been diagnosed without have the messed up cycles and cysts. I had an ultrasound for my severe cramping about 2 months ago and it was clear. My periods are more regular now than when I was on the pill, but before that years ago, I was severely messed up. I have the skin discoloration and the facial hair. I have not been able to lose any weight in the last year even though I exercise on a regular basis and my diet has improved from when I lost my first 40 pounds, I have managed to keep off about 28. I talked to my doctor and she thinks that I don't have this but I can certainly be tested, but before I spent the money to do this, I wanted to see if anyone out there was diagnosed without the 2 biggest symptoms. I appreciate any help. Thanks!
