Re: Metformin problemsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 9 Jul 2002 16:17:39 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Victoria and other PCOSers, I was diagnosed with PCOS and IR in December of 2000. I was put on a low-carb diet (designed for those TTC and with gestational diabetes) for several months and given one round of Clomid back in Oct. Thank God, I am due in a week. I've had my blood sugar monitored the entire length of my pregnancy, but still developed gestational diabetes in my 7th month. I've been on a low dose of insulin since then. I was never on Metformin, but my doctor says that regardless of the method you are using to control your bood sugar, it is likely to rise considerably during pregnancy because of hormones produced by the placenta. Also, another reason PCOSers have to go on insulin during pregnancy is because many doctors will automatically take you off of Metformin when you are pregnant because of a lack of information about the effects of the drug on pregnancy. Along these lines, has anyone known of someone who got pregnant on Met, but then miscarried when their doctor took them off? This happened to a good friend of mine, but it isn't clear whether it is coincidental (miscarriage in 1st pregnancies is common even in non-PCOSers) or causal. Thanks!
