Insulin resistance (IR) is believed to be the root cause of PCOS. It's a condition where the individual doesn't respond to insulin normally, causing the body to overproduce insulin, which triggers PCOS. It's treated with an insulin sensitizer, of which Glucophage (metformin) is a popular example.

It's important than the IR person not only take medication, but eat a low-carb diet as well. Exercise is also helpful.
