Hi Pat, I have to defend the pharma industry. Natural progesterone (P) is hardly absorbed from the GI tract. It has been extensively researched in the early years of endocrinology (Selye, 1935) and turned out to be useless for human application. Therefore it was a tremendous breakthrough, when German organic chemists succeeded to synthetise the first orally active estrogen (ethynil-estradiol) and gestagen. The ones (norethisterone among them) that were applied in oral contraceptives were synthetised later by C. Jerassy. Only the physiochemical manipulation (micronization) of P rendered it absorbable from the GI tract. And still it is less active than the synthetic derivatives (therefore not available as a conttraceptive). And porvera is a very good synthetic choice being a close relative of the natural compound: medroxy-progesterone-acetate. For your info Sam
