nausea and heartburn from metformin?

I have been taking metformin for almost 2 months. I started on 500mg a day for the first month, and am now taking 750 mg a day. I never have experienced any side effects from the met until recently, and even then I don't know if they are from the met at all. I get nausea after I eat meals, and I've been getting heartburn quite frequently for the last 2 or 3 weeks. Are these normal side effects of metformin, or should I be concerned about them? And how come I never had any side effects before and now I do?
