Re: Baby Aspirin during pregnancyFrom: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 18 Jun 2002 09:26:21 -0500 (CDT)
>I have learned that it is helpful for many pcos-ers to take baby aspirin (81 mg) once a day during early pregnancy to prevent blood clotting. Do you have info or links that explain when this should be stopped? I have heard that in the last trimester, no aspirin should be consumed, but how long before that can I continue?< Steph-- There is recent information out of Great Britain that indicates low-dosage aspirin (81 mg/qd) is of no danger to your unborn child. The old thinking was that it would make a newborn more susceptible to bleeding during labour and shortly after birth, but these new studies indicate the exact opposite--there is no impairment of clotting ability in newborns whose mothers took l.d. aspirin therapy all through pgy. I took l.d. aspirin all the way through my pgy in addition to taking heparin injections (yuck!) all the way through to prevent any clotting (estrogen causes me to clot). My son was born perfectly normal, and there was no problem with his clotting ability at birth. In addition, I had a c-section birth (after many hours of labouring unsuccessfully), and there were no problems with excess bleeding during or after the surgery. HTH
