Prometrium vs Progesterone creamFrom: BJ (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 May 2002 21:46:13 -0500 (CDT)
It is good that some doctors are "picking up on" Prometrium instead of synthetic progestins but I think there are enough possible problems with it to merit using the natural progesterone creams instead. By problems I mean mostly the fact that Prometrium is about 5 times the amount of progesterone that your body normally makes per day (in a 100mg capsule). Although the liver will filter a lot of that out of the blood before it gets to the rest of the body, why stress out our poor livers unnecessarily? All it takes is for our liver to be overworked by another drug, or alcohol, etc. and you are looking at a possible overdose. I have used Prometrium but only a couple of times when I was "flooding" and needed to deliberately overdose on progesterone to stop the bleeding. It worked great for that purpose. Also the cream allows for fine tuning of the dosage that is impossible with pills. And lastly, for me a big issue, why keep feeding the pharmaceutical companies all our money and running up health care costs with these over-priced prescription drugs? Take care all, and keep asking the hard questions! BJ
