Re: BCP and severe PCOS symptomsFrom: Victoria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 22 May 2002 20:40:56 -0400
Hi, Depends on who you want to believe. There's not been any study on PCO'ers that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt BCP has long term effects. We've had people who say they have had things happen to them on the net. So you get different stories. I've seen ladies who lost weight on BCP alone, and those who said they've gained weight. Some people end up taking several medications to help them. All that matters is the medication helps you and your symptoms and problems. If you want a BCP, Yasmin might be an option. Your doc shouldn't care which one you are on. You might want to find out if you can figure out which of the medications is making you sick though. Depends on what you want to try first: going to a new BCP or dropping it or the Metformin or the Spironolactone to see which is the culprit. Did you inch up to the 1500 mg of Glucophage or start it all at once? As for the medications, you never know for sure if you have to take them the rest of your life. Some say yes, some say no. I just saw http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/433390 (Medline is a free signup) and there is no studies on long term effects of taking drugs before being diagnosed. There was also comment about nothing on the cardiovascular effects. So go figure. As for a hysterectomy, how does your doctor think that is supposed to help? He gives you Glucophage, so he should recognize a glucose/insulin component. What part of the IR concept would a uterus removal do?
