Article on MetforminFrom: Victoria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 14 May 2002 20:48:21 -0400
http://www.soulcysters.com/ubb/Forum26/HTML/000047.html In a small trial of women taking metformin as treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Italian researchers found the agent effective in about half. During a subsequent investigation as to why the insulin-sensitizing agent helped some and not others, Moghetti and associates found three predictive variables for positive response to metformin: less severe menstrual irregularities, higher plasma insulin, and lower serum androstenedione. Insulin sensitizers "may be effective only in the insulin-resistant subset of this heterogeneous syndrome," they suggest in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, where the two-part study was recently published.
