Hi Emily,

it is believed that the current tests for insulin resistnace are not sensitive enough to pick up all cases of insulin resistance. However, it is also believed that insulin resistance is the main cause of PCOS. This is bourne out bythe fact that even women without proven Insulin Resistance (using currently avialable medical tests) can benefit from using Metformin.

I did not test positive for insulin resistnace though my endo only did a glucose tolerance test (without combining insulin and glucose. However, I am on met and belive that I am benefiting from it.

Perhpas the way to go would be to ask your dr. to let you trial metformin to see if it will help. It most likely will, though you should start very slowly and then build up to a dose that gives you best effect (anywhere from 500 - 2000 mg/day - and higher dose does not necessarily mean better effect - some women get better effect with lower dose apparently).

Hope this helps

Sally
