Re: But What, Precisely, Are the Risks? From: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 24 Apr 2002 07:14:18 -0500 (CDT)
>For diet, try a balanced low carb approach such as the Zone (should still be suitable while breast feeding, as long as you are sure to get enough calories) or sugar busters. Would not recommend something too strict such as Atkins while breast feeding.< As one last entry on the breastfeeding-treatment of PCO thread, I happened to be leafing through "What to Expect in the First Year" (by Eisenberg, Murkoff, and Hathaway) last night and came across some info that was new to me, and may be new to others: " ...you shouldn't cut calories drastically because your body could start producing ketones, metabolic byproducts that (by passing in to your milk) could be harmful to your nursing baby. In addition, melting body fat quickly releases any toxic chemicals stored in the fat into your bloodstream and then in to your breastmilk." We know that the "goal" of low-carbing is ketosis, so this indicates that ketosis can be dangerous to nursing infants. I suspect there are not too many doctors who would recommend both nursing and low-carbing at the same time. Like I said, this was new to me, and I thought might be helpful in this discussion.
