Re: Metformin and Breastfeeding -- Relative Risks?From: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 19 Apr 2002 12:49:51 -0500 (CDT)
>My doctor was going to put me on metformin until he was reminded that I was still nursing. He looked it up and found that metformin was not approved for use during breastfeeding. So he gave me a prescription to fill when the baby has weaned but did not discuss the consequences of the various alternatives -- treating while nursing, delaying treatment until weaning, etc..< Our son is now 12 weeks old and according to our pediatrician (former head of neonatology at a major university), the ONLY drugs that are strictly contraindicated for nursing are chemotherapy drugs. I took Actos (insulin sensitizer) all through my pgy and continue now that I'm nursing. There is no good study (or any studies, for that matter) about nursing and insulin sensitizer, b/c there are so many factors that control what makes it in to your breastmilk. I will only nurse until my baby is a year old and will maintain my dosage of Actos for that time, but ultimately the decision is yours. My son is perfectly healthy, does not have any problems or abnormalities from my medication regimen. Also, if you consider that he got a much stronger dose of Actos in utero (via my bloodstream) than what he does now through my milk, any risk is even lower now that he's outside of me. HTH
