Metformin and Breastfeeding -- Relative Risks?

I have been diagnosed with elevated testosterone levels and probable PCOS. My doctor was going to put me on metformin until he was reminded that I was still nursing. He looked it up and found that metformin was not approved for use during breastfeeding. So he gave me a prescription to fill when the baby has weaned but did not discuss the consequences of the various alternatives -- treating while nursing, delaying treatment until weaning, etc..

I would like to know about relative risks. Does the age of the baby make a difference? (It is my little guy's 2nd birthday today). Does the frequency of nursing matter? What will happen to me if I delay treatment for another year or more? What else do I need to know about this issue?

Unfortunately, I cannot discuss this with my doctor because I am in the midst of a long distance move and an insurance change. I have no doctor now and must find a new one.
