Hi Jona,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I think very low carb (aka Atkins and Ketosis) does not sound wise for pregnancy. And Atkins does mention in his book that the strict level of the diet is not suitable for pregnancy.

However, for pregnancy you probably still need to pretty strict with all the refined carbs (like white bread, pasta, noodles, sugar - in any form, biscuits, cakes, sweets, sugary fruits, fruit juices) to avoid the insulin/sugar fluctuations (which surely are also not good for baby). Get your carbs from vegetables (exclude potato if they cause you to binge) and very high fibre carb sources (like whole wheat breads), brown rice, oats, lentils. Fruits may need to be limited - You will probably have to experiment with what foods don't cause you to binge and have energy slumps.

Basically you are looking for foods low on the glycemic index (ie don't cause much insulin response). Some books with this approach include the Zone and Sugar Busters.

The only thing with really high fibre foods and veges is that you have to eat quite a lot to get your calorie requirements. But if you don't suffer too much from morning sickness, etc. that should be ok.

Another tip for reducing the slumps is to eat small snacks very regularly rather than big meals. These, apparently - this is Zone Theory, should comprise of both a protein and a carbohydrate (ie some nuts and a piece of dried fruit), an egg or some cheese on a whole-wheat cracker, green salad with some sort of meat or cheese, etc.

Hope this helps
