Victoria, Best regards to your research capabilities, but Dr. Speroff's 6th edition of that book was published June 15, 1999. Medical books are not something to take as definitive. Each is updated as research and trials are completed. Since 1999, many endocrinologists and diabetes specialists are throwing out bcps for use by diabetics. All bcp package inserts must (by FDA law) include a warning not to use them if the patient has diabetes mellitis. It makes no sense to give it to anyone with insulin problems, since it is proven to aggravate ir. After all, some medical texts promoted blood letting into the 19th century. And we know today, that is ridiculous. JAMA, NEJM and Clinical Endocrinology all have more current articles online which outline specifically why bcps are contraindicated. sincerely, anne
