Re: Birth control pillsFrom: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 2 Apr 2002 19:09:23 -0600 (CST)
Hi Sam, I understand your logic regarding the IR and not making it worse. However, I personally (and that is personal and everyone has their opinion) beleive that controlling some of the other symptoms (like hair and skin problems, and regulating periods - which they do do for some people) - which can be really bad for our self esteem, not to mention that they are a convenient and reliable form of contraception can be good reason to use them. Feeling better about some of the worse symptoms of this condition is also very important and is a very tangible result. Of course if one is not looking for contraception, there may be other means of treating these symptoms.... Doesn't IR get worse with age regardless (as we tend to exercise less and gain weight, changes in metabolism, etc. etc. as we get older)? Does using metformin (or equivalent) with or without the BCP prevent the IR getting worse? If metformin can counteract or prevent the IR worsening effect of BCP surely they would make a good combination for selected patients. I am assuming that Metformin is proven to prevent progression to diabetes? Or perhaps there are no studies yet. Metformin has not been used for PCOS for very long and still not officially. I enjoy all your comments. Thank you for your information.
