Informative Websites

Hi All! Here are two sites I have found to be very interesting and informative.

Also, there seems to be a lot of confusion about progesterone. Real progesterone is a unique hormone that our bodies make. The synthetics like Provera, etc. that are given as prescription drugs are referred to as progestins and are NOT the same as real progesterone. "Natural" progesterone is another name for the real thing, natural meaning bio-identical to what our bodies make. Prometrium is an oral form of natural progesterone but is a very high dose and should not be used for extended periods of time. There is another oral natural progesterone available but I can't think of its name offhand. These oral forms are by prescription because the delivery method, the oil capsule, has been patented. Natural hormones can not be patented and are available over the counter. Progesterone creams available this way are actually the best way to supplement with this hormone because the cream delivers a physiologically similar dose, is easier to adjust, and carries much less risk for overdose than the oral forms. A 2 ounce tube (or jar) of cream runs about $25 and will last over a month with normal dosing. Progesterone will balance the estrogen in our bodies and generally has no side effects in normal doses while synthetics are not the same chemical structure and will be handled by our bodies in differing ways, often with nasty side effects. Progesterone cures the side effects that progestins cause. Progesterone should not normally be used continuously as the receptor sites tend to "burn out" and the hormone stops being effective. A 3 to 7 day break each month is usually recommended. Three weeks of use is advised to get a condition (endometriosis, etc.) under control while 10-14 days starting at time of ovulation is recommended normally and to increase fertility.

Most doctors (MDs) don't acknowledge the difference between the real thing and the pharmaceuticals and use the term progesterone for both. This leads to confusion, especially when we read articles about negative effects from "progesterone". The studies we read about in the mainstream press are done with synthetic progestins but the wrong term is often used, thus giving progesterone a bad reputation it definitely does not deserve. Birth control pills contain synthetic progestins, not real progesterone.

I am not a doctor but I have spent many years reasearching this topic and have been using natural progesterone for the last 8 years with great success.

Wish you all better health, BJ
