Re: Excessive Weight and Infertility WorriesFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Mar 2002 21:56:50 -0600 (CST)
Hi! Yeah, I've heard that about Glucophage. Many women seem to lose right at first and then the weight loss gradually tapers off. You said that you've been on a "low calorie" diet. You might want to try a low carb diet if you aren't on one already. Check out Amazon.com or your local bookstore. There are many low carb plans -- Atkins, Carbohydrate Addicts, Sugarbusters, The Zone, Protein Power, etc. Low carb diets have helped many women with PCOS lose weight. The traditional low-fat and low-calorie diets are typically very high in carbs and I even gain weight on a traditional diet. Many women with PCOS are very metabolically resistant and have to drop their carbs really low in order to lose weight. You may have to experiment with how many carbs you can eat per day in order to lose. Also, exercise is KEY. As for the Glucophage, continue to take it especially if you're trying to get pregnant. If you do not conceive with a low carb diet and Glucophage see your doctor. The combination of Clomid (an oral ovulation med) with Glucophage has been successful in many women with PCOS. Don't lose hope. After Clomid and Gluc there are many other options including injectables, artificial insem, etc. God bless! Tera
