Re: New and questions about doctors and treatmentFrom: Victoria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 24 Mar 2002 12:10:59 -0500
Hi, Extra weight may or may not make the difference to your PCO. There are studies out (I have a Human Reproduction in mind right now) that have shown that losing weight helps restore ovulation, (the specific one I'm thinking of included PCO women), etc. So part of the problem I think that is coming into play when docs say things like this, is that extra weight does have an impact on fertility. They are probably confusing regular weight gain with PCO. Does that make sense? Best person to treat PCO is whoever best meets your needs. It can be anyone, because any doctor can be knowledgeable in it. What do you have as goals, long and short term? That will determine your treatment, which can be anything from the pill to Avandia, Actos, Metformin, a change in style of eating, exercise, and herbals or 'natural' methods. You can be on both Metfomrin and the pill, no studies have shown a problem with using them together. Diabetic women who are on medications do use the pill.
