After years of suffering and being told there was no treatment for PCOS, my girlfriend started Glucophage (the product name for the drug metformin) last fall. She initially had some trouble tolerating the drug, but it didn't take too long for her to get past that. She is now feeling better, losing weight, and actually having regular periods.

We read that it's best to take the Glucophage part way through a meal rather than before or after. If you're worried about side effects, you should also discuss Glucophage XR with your endocrinologist. XR is the time-release formulation of the drug, and I've read that some people have fewer side effects taking it.

You're doing the right thing by getting on metformin; you would be even if you didn't want to conceive. If you do have some discomfort adjust to it, just remember how important it is that you have the medication. Any discomfort should pass if you stick with it.
