Your daughters need to be diagnosed by a medical professional. If they have PCOS, they need to be medicated. Some doctors will attempt to cover up the symptoms using birth control pills, but the consensus among knowledgeable people seems to be that metformin (sometimes referred to by its brand name, Glucophage) is the only treatment that will address the underlying causes of the disease.

It's very important that they be treated because PCOS left untreated can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Don't panic, though. PCOS is not an easy condition to live with, but medication and a good diet (my girlfriend's doctor recommended the Zone) work wonders.

Keep in mind that not all doctors are very knowledgeable about PCOS. Do as much research as you can; that's the only way you'll really be able to tell the difference. My girlfriend had to change doctors before she could get help. Her previous doctor steadfastly maintained for years that there were no treatments of any for PCOS except exercise (moron!).

As for you, I'm not really knowledgeable enough to know how your hysterectomy would effect the condition. Since the underlying problem with PCOS is not the ovaries or uterus but insulin resistance, it doesn't seem surprising that your hysterectomy hasn't solved your complaints. Other posters may be able to provide more information. Have you discussed your concerns with your doctor?
