Re: I have a Doctor's AppointmentFrom: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 Feb 2002 11:25:01 -0600 (CST)
>I am also still breastfeeding, is anybody out there nursing and on Metformin?< I, too, am nursing, and asked my son's pediatrician about the meds I take for PCO and whether it would pass through my milk and/or cause problems. I am not on Met, but I take Actos for an insulin sensitizer. The pediatrician (former head of neonatology at a major university) indicated that the only drugs that are truly contraindicated during breastfeeding are chemotherapy drugs. Apparently, there are many things that can affect whether or not something the mother takes shows up in her milk, so there are few (if any) studies that can accurately track anything. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that if it helps the mother, it's better for the child to have a healthy mom and chance the small amounts of meds that might show up in her milk than one who's not as healthy, not taking her meds, and still nursing.
