Re: Medications that help lower androgen levels??????From: Mindy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 24 Feb 2002 23:44:28 -0600 (CST)
I also was very frustrated when I started taking Glucophage and asked my doctor to give me Spiro too. He said the same thing your doc did but he eventually prescribed it for me and I had an allergic reaction. Therefore I was forced to rely only on glucophage. It has been 6 months now since first taking glucophage and my androgen levels are fairly normal finally. Glucophage actually will help the body to stop making so much androgens eventually but Spiro is kind of a short term quick fix. I totally understand wanting the quick fix but you most likely won't NEED it. Glucophage is better because it fixes the main problem but Spiro helps with just a side effect. You can take both and get more immediate results and then decide to stop the Spiro after 6 months or so if your doc will agree to it. But just remember and I hope this helps, you don't have to take any of those meds except glucophage to treat your pcos. Increasing the dosage of the glucophage is a good idea too I think. I also insisted on that early on because of what I read here ( i'm on 1500mg). Good luck. Mindy
