Re: My daughterFrom: Molly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 22 Feb 2002 13:15:55 -0800
Hi Betsy, my heart is with you both. My daughter Rachel, now 18, had some rough years with PCOS, getting a diagnosis and getting healthy. She is now a senior in high school and is thriving. I also was hesitant about glucophage (or "met" as we call it.) She started on it two and a half years ago. It really regulated her body. She also take aldactone and Diane 35 birth control pills. I have nothing but positive things to say about met. I realize it does not work for everyone but adolescents seem to tolerate it well. Please feel free to email me privately with any questions! Good luck! They tried to use Aldactone and Orthotrycline - but neither worked. She is seeing a great Nutritionist - who has finally got her on a low carb diet and she has lost 20 pounds in about a month and a half - but she still has the most unbelievably unregulated periods. She is a varsity athlete throwing both shot put, disc, and weight and still bleeds about 3-4 weeks a month. She has terrible mood swings and she is getting pretty depressed about the entire situation. I have been doing a lot of reading about Glucophage - but from what I am reading it is not recommended for pediatric patients. Are most of you followed by an Endocrinologist or by a GYN and what birth control pills have you tried that you have found to be successful - or what other medications have worked for you. I can not tell you how thrilled I am to find that there are places like this to ask these types of questions. When I get home tonight I will have Sammy log onto her computer and check out this page. I would like to thank anybody who takes the time to answer this and I truly appreciate all of your assistance. Betsy
