Dear Maddy: I found that an AlkaSelzer tablet taken once a day for a week or so removed the GI side effects for me. I only use it once a week now, but I still get some GI upset occasionally on 1500mg/day. AlkaSeltzer has bicarb in it and I think this is what works.. Glucophage can cause a mild acidosis in some people, and the bicarb reverses this. I have blood tests done every 8 wks and I have a mild elevation in the anion gap.. which suggests low bicarb. AlkaSeltzer Hearburn Refief has no aspirin in it for those who wish to avoid aspirin. Take care.
