Hi Genie,

I think that the XR and the metformin are different and some people (I think it was in the Samuel Thatcher book) have noted that metformin can be more effective than the XR and XR should only be used if a person has gastric side effects that don't resolve over time. I live in Asia and have tried three diffent brands of metformin... because I was in different countries when I got the prescription filled...and we have two: Metformin and Fornidd available here in Philippines, they all claim on their info sheet to have the same formulation..... and some were definitely cheaper than others.

I haven't personally noticed any difference between the different brands... so can only say - give it a try and see....
