Generic metformin

My pharmacy has just refilled my prescription for Glucophage with a newly available generic metformin HCL. Apparently, my physician did not write DAW on the original prescription, because the generic was not available last year. I know the generic is cheaper, and that the HMO has a higher copaymant for the brand name, but is the generic really as good? Some time ago, I tried the time-release form of Glucophage (XR), and it did not work as well as the original type taken with meals. This suggests that even though the chemical formula of the active ingredient is the same, the details of manufacture might make a difference to the rate of absorption into the bloodstream.
