Re: glucofage instead of clomidFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 1 Feb 2002 23:07:52 -0600 (CST)
Hi! No, they are not the same thing at all. In a nut shell, Glucophage is given to PCOS women to help with insulin resistance which is thought to be the underlying factor of PCOS. It is thought that if you do something for the underlying factor you will get relief from some of the symptoms. Women have had relief from some symptoms while taking it including me. Some women are able to get more regular cycles, lose some weight, have some help with hair loss, etc. Clomid is a medication used to help induce ovulation. They are definately different medications entirely! The research that I have looked up on the net and have heard from others and my doctor is that women with PCOS who take Glucophage AND Clomid have MUCH higher rate of ovulation than those on Clomid alone. This is a short answer but I hope this helps. If you are even slightly insulin resistant you might have very good success on the combination of meds. Ask your doctor about this. Feel free to e-mail anytime! God bless! Tera
