suggestions for Glucophage stomach upsetFrom: mrsdoubtfyre (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jan 2002 10:47:56 -0600 (CST)
Hello all: I have been reading and recommending this board to women who post at another location where I participate http://www.braintalk.org I am a postmenopausal PCOS medical professional.. and I still have the insulin resistance issues that have been recently discovered. I am taking Glucophage XR 1000mg/day (raising to 1500 this week) and have had great improvements in many health issues. Lowering cholesterol by 70 pts, and dramatic blood pressure improvements as well as eliminating peripheral neuropathy issues that were very painful. I certainly wish this PCOS info had been available to me 20 years ago! Like some of the posters here, I have severe GI problems with Glucophage. I also have a birth defect called malrotation of the bowel, which I am sure contributes. However, I want to share a simple remedy that really works for me..to stop the diarrhea cold, and cramping (I get this for about 2 weeks each time I do a dose increase). I use an AlkaSeltzer tablet which provides bicarb and within 10min the symptoms are gone, for most the day. I am using the regular AlkaSeltzer with aspirin, but an aspirin free version is available called Heartburn relief. I did alot of searching on the net about acidosis, etc, and suspect that those who have this GI adjustment problem might be mildly acidiotic. Certain meds cause this (Diamox, ACE inhibitors, alcohol), and a high protein diet. I have a renal panel run every 60 days, and show normal electrolytes but a mild elevation of the anion gap.. which suggested the acidiosis connection. This is a mild effect and may be missed on screening. So I wanted to post here and suggest the AlkaSeltzer connection. It has certainly been a relief for me, that is for sure!! I certainly enjoy reading this board, and refer women to it often.. Best Wishes!
