I wrote recently to ask what you all knew about spiro and hairloss: My new RE suggested that I stay on glucophage, go back on the pill, and start taking spiro for hairloss. I was confused about this, because my old endocrinologist (I recently moved) had said that glucophage alone would help re-grow hair, and this new RE said that that definitely was NOT the case -- that even spiro wouldn't re-grow hair, that I needed to start using Rogaine for that. So, I actually called Dr. Glueck, who is mentioned so often in the PCOS book by Thatcher and who seems to be one of the main experts in the field. I filled him in on my situation, and I thought I'd pass on what he said to me: he strongly discouraged me from going on spiro, discouraged me from going back on the pill (as it increases insulin resistence, something we *don't* want), and he discouraged the use of Rogaine, too. He said that I should stay on the glucophage -- but that I should go on the regular kind, as opposed to XR, because that seems to work better in women with PCOS. (I am now on regular glucophage, 850 mg, three times a day, as he suggested.) He mentioned that most women see their hair grow back, but that it could take up to a year. I thought this was very interesting. Medicine sometimes seems to me to be as much about interpretation as it is about hard science. So, food for thought.
