Dr. Sam: Any ideas for PCOS hairloss?

Hi Dr. Sam,

I have PCOS and have been experiencing hair loss since October. My OBGYN has been treating my PCOS and she is only semi-knowledgeable on the subject. She is open to new ideas and my research, though. I usually do research on my own, and then bring to her the results of my research and I have started Glucophage for my PCOS and Spironolactone for my hair loss because of this.

She did not know what dose to start me at on the Spiro and so I've been taking it for about a month and a half at 50 mg per day with no results. I called her this week to ask her if she could up the dose and she did to 100 mg per day. I start tonight.

Like I said, I've been losing my hair since October and it is coming out FAST! It clogs up my shower drain and I can't run my hand through my hair without getting A LOT of hair in my hand. I'm scared to brush it. It is thinning everywhere and no one else can notice it yet, but I do and it is REALLY thinning the fastest around the hair line. I'm a bit scared to try Rogaine for Women because I know that it says that it does not work for everyone and that hairloss can increase for a few weeks at first. I don't want my hair loss to increase only to have Rogaine not help me in the end. I don't want to lose more hair than I have to. It seems like a gamble to me. What should I do? My OBGYN is not sure. She has no experience with PCOS hair loss. For me, this is the worst PCOS symptom of all! Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you! God bless! Tera
