Hi Fran

I'm in England too - I live on Essex/London borders. There are a few other UK ladies on this board.

PCOS is (I believe) the most common cause of infertility and also the most treatable. You have a very good chance of conceiving a child, it will just take you a little longer.

Take a look at http://www.pcosupport.org, which has lots of information. In the support section their are some booklets which you can download, including one about questions to ask on your first doctor's appointment.

Current opinion is that the underlying cause of PCOS is Insulin Resistance (IR). Our cells are not as responsive to the insulin produced by our pancreas. To compensate, more and more insulin is produced, and it is this higher level of insulin circulating in our bodies that affects our hormone levels. One impact of this is to affect our ability to ovulate.

Many ladies on this board take Metformin (aka Glucophage) which helps the cells in the body to be more sensitive to insulin. Make sure you discuss this option with your doctor. Metformin alone, or sometimes with Clomid, induces ovulation in a really high percentage of women. I don't have the exact statistics, but something like 90%.

Some doctors can be a bit behind with the latest developments in this area - some Doctors are happy to prescribe Metformin, others are not. Do some research (ladies, please jump in with useful sites to get this information!) so that you are able to ask the doc the right questions and make an informed choice.

These PCOS boards are a really great source of info and support - keep asking any questions you have, there is lots of experience here!
