Sarah, it sounds like you need to change your gp, Metformin has been used for the treatment of pcos for at least 18 months in the uk, Ihave been taking it on and off for that amount of time, and I live in the north west of England. There is tons of information regarding the use and dosage of metformin on the net, you could even give this web address, or http://www.verity.com which is another good website. If all else fails, ask her to refer you to a specialist, because they are sure to be able to advise you better than your gp. I actually took a magazine article about metformin into the appointment with my gp and after 2 days of him checking up it was ok for me to take, i was on it, so dont give up!!! As far as benefits/disadvantages goes, it keeps your weight down, it helps with the excess hair, regulates your periods, and makes you 'feel' better,,, on the downside, it can really upset your stomach.

Hope any of this help chick.
