Re: Anyone have hypothyroidism?From: Teresa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 27 Jan 2002 23:47:20 -0600 (CST)
I am hypothyroid as well. When I went to see an endo for PCOS, the blood test revealed I have low thyroid. My symptoms are the same as yours and it runs in my family. She put me on Levoxyl (Synthroid) but after four months, I didn't feel any different. She then added Cytomel and what a difference!!! If you are very tired, I highly recommend asking about the Levoxyl/Cytomel combo. Or it's referred to as T4/T3 combo. The body needs both and usually the body will convert some of the T4 (Levoxyl) to T3 (Cytomel). The T3 factor is much, much stronger than T4. In fact some serious (and crazy) body builders will take Cytomel to lose fat and speed up their metabolism. My doctor told me, and I also did research on it, that some people don't seem to convert T4 like they should so the T3 factor needs to be supplemented as well. I can get up in the morning now and not fall asleep behind the wheel while I am drving. My dry skin is better too but my hair is still very dry and brittle. Some of that might be the PCOS since my hair is thinning as well. It is important that you get this checked out. You will feel so much better. I found the following website to be very good and that is where I read about the T4/T3 therapy. Good luck! http://thyroid.about.com/cs/hypothyroidism/
