Re: How long is it safe to take Glucophage? From: Sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 25 Jan 2002 19:01:01 -0600 (CST)
Dear Haley, glucophage appears to be very safe (from what I have read) and many endos (mine included) suggest that we take it long-term. The jury is out regarding taking glucophage during pregnancy, but according to Samual Thatcher - PCOS the hidden epidemic, it may well have a role for prevention of miscarriage and for maintaining normal insulin and preventing pregnancy related diabetes (much more common in PCOS). If Metformin has really helped you, you probably should continue with it (at least up until the time that you are pregnant and you may consider taking it during pregnancy (they say the first trimester is the most critical). The decision is up to you. Regarding birth defects, I think that is also not proven - nothing conclusive in the literature and it seems that Met is considered ok for use by diabetic women during pregnancy (though overtly diabetic women have much higher risk pregnancy than those of us with just IR). The only sure advice I have seen is to make sure that you take folic acid supplement as well as the Metformin. But that is recommended for all women who are trying to get pregnant. Hope this helps. Probably you could do a search using "pregnancy" and "Metformin" and come up with more info. There is plenty of info on this and other sites and there are women here who have successfully used metformin throughout pregnancy and others who stopped and still had a successful pregnancy. I am not a doctor, so this is just my opinion based on what I have read. Best wishes,
-- Sally
