How long is it safe to take Glucophage?

I have been on Glucophage XR for 8 months now and am currently on my 3rd round of Clomid. We recently moved and I had to switch doctors. My new endo. informed me that I needed to quit taking the Glucophage if I was trying to get pregnant as it could cause birth defects. Literature I have read suggests that it is safe, necessary for women with PCOS, and could possibly help to prevent early miscarriage. Is it safe to become pregnant while taking Glucophage? How long into the pregnancy should one continue taking the Glucophage? The Glucophage has done wonders for my PCOS symptoms. Thank you!--Haley
