Glucophage XR

It has been awhile since I have been to this site, so please excuse this if it has been answered before!

I have been taking Actos for the last year because I tried Metformin for a year (working up to 2550mg/day) and it made me so sick. The Actos has no side effects whatsoever (except that I have gained 20 lbs.), and my periods are coming every 4-5 weeks. I recently went back to my doctor for a new prescription of Actos, and he told me about the new Glucophage XR. He said that the gastral side effects are non-existant with this new pill. He gave me some samples and asked me to try it. The sample says that you only have to take one a day (500 mg). Is this enough for PCOS? Or is it like the other type where you have to take 1500 - 2000mg to make any difference? And does it help with weight loss? The Actos is great for convenience - I take one little pill in the morning, and I am done. I have periods, but the facial hair is still a big problem, and I can't lose weight.

Any help would be great! Thanks, Kathy
