Kava KavaFrom: Barbra (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Jan 2002 06:58:20 -0600 (CST)
To some that may be taking this herb,as either a supplement or a tea for anxiety-it has now been offically removed from the shelves in Canada by Health Canada. It had also been removed in Europe. They are telling people that if they have any in their house,to dispose of it. It is known to cause serious liver damage. So far there have been a couple cases in Europe, where one person died and another two are in need of liver transplants. If anyone is taking this herb and is noticing a yellow hue to the skin, nausea,or some alter in bowel habits, please be checked by your doctor. Many take this herb for anxiety. I had taken it for six months, till my MD had informed me that it was dangerous on the liver,as I already had some compromised liver function tests in the past. I am hoping that the next to be removed will be the Colloidal Silver and Gold that I was also taking. I am always getting myself in a rut no matter what I take. Next they'll be saying that Saw Palmetto is hazardous-with my luck! So,where FDA is concerned-I don't think that is them that are actually pulling herbs and supplements off the shelves, but rather, the Health and Welfare. There are some deadly herbs out there. Before resorting to any herbs-please ask a well informed doctor! I know that I will now. One lesson learned here-don't try something that someone else suggests without further researching it yourself and getting your doctor's approval for it's use. What may pose no risk for one-may turn out to be deadly in another where herbs are concerned. The problem is,that with herbal supplements-the batches tend to differ. I thought I had better post this,as I am certain that I had mentioned on a post a while back, that I had taken Kava Kava tea weekly.I did research it first and knew that with continuous, long term usage,it could possibly cause jaundice or some liver abnormalities. I am certain that I had made a statment of that as well. But,since then,I never had thought to mention that my MD had told me to discontinue the use of Kava Kava especially for those out there who may be taking any of the benzodiazepams for related anxiety.
