Insulin Resistance Testing and Glucophage QuestionsFrom: NHoetker (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 20 Jan 2002 23:18:47 -0600 (CST)
I've been diagnosed with PCOS for 10 years now, and have been fortunate to have conceived 2 children with the help of repro-endo docs and ovulation induction. Since weaning my daughter I've convinced my GYN to test for insulin resistance and start me on Glucophage (1500 mg/day). I go in to see her on Tuesday for liver function tests, and I think I have a few more questions for her, but wanted to get some input here, first. Number one, the numbers I'm seeing people report for their insulin test results are far different than mine...which unfortunately I didn't write down when the nurse gave them to me on the phone, but I remember them being in the 100s, not the teens...what's up with that? Are there different tests, or different scales? Next, how does one determine if one is on the correct dosage of Glucophage? I have not had any side effects to speak of, nor have I had any dramatic weight loss. I do feel as though my energy level has gone up dramatically, and that my cravings have gone down for the most part. (The exception would be during my period...has anyone else experienced this?) I've seen that some women are on doses twice mine...was this determined by more insulin tests? I don't know this GYN very well, since I've only seen her once and she's not necessarily well-versed in PCOS stuff. I'm thinking of asking for a referral to an endocrinologist...any feelings on that? Sorry if this is running long...and thanks for your replies! -N.
