Dr. Sam,

I have to disagree with you on this. PCOS and PCO are very different conditions, and not synonyms.

PCOS is the complex syndrome with a large number of physical manifestations, including IR, homonal imbalances, weight gain, facial hair, head hair loss, fertility difficulty, etc. Though named PolyCYSTIC Ovarian Syndrome, ovarian cysts are neither sufficient nor necessary. Many PCOSers don't have cysts. The common presentation of cysts, when they occur, is the small "string of pearls" variety. Most women with PCOS know something is wrong, but don't know what, or have difficulty getting answers.

PCO is the presence of cysts without the other conditions. The common presentation is isolated large cysts, not a "string." While these cysts can cause pain, may burst, and may need to be drained, the problem is isolated to these cysts. There are many women walking around with PCO who don't know anything is wrong.

There are PCOSers who don't have cysts, and PCOers who dont' have PCOS.

I just wanted to clarify this point so that women weren't confused and expecting a lifetime of health challenges just because they have a few cysts on their ovaries without the whole syndrome.
