Re: Metformin and Spironolactone with no symptoms?

My step-father has a potassium defficiency, and if he doesn't take potassium tablets every day his arms, chest, legs and feet cramp up. When I say cramp up, I mean you can actually see the tension in his muscles as his hands curl up into balls. It is EXTREMELY painful as well, because I can remember when I was a kid going in my room and hiding under pillows and blankets to try and muffle the screams of agony coming from him. He also takes bananas with him to work and makes sure he drinks orange juice a couple of times a day.

Muscle cramps can be caused from a lack of potassium--met is a potassium-store depleting medication, even though spiro is a potassium-preserving drug. I had many times of 'side stitches' and other muscle cramps that were due to a lack of potassium in my system--they went away when I stocked up on the mineral. Potassium can be found in high concentrations in raisins, orange juice, yogurt, bananas, dark green leafy veggies, etc. Do a web search on potassium and you'll find a list of good foods to eat that will stock you up on the stuff.
