Re: PrednizoneFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 28 Dec 2001 01:29:16 -0600 (CST)
>From Renee :) Prednisone is a steroid. It's effect is anti-inflammatory. I agree that most people shouldn't be on it for a long time. Some people need to be for respiratory issues, but there are side effects. It can make blood sugar control more difficult in the short run. In the long term, it can weaken bone, thin skin (I had a patient whose skin was translucent-I could see through it), and have other effects. Glucosamine/Chondroitin are a dietary supplement that has been getting more attention and use over the last couple years. Unlike most other herbals, dietary supplements, and neutriceuticals, there has actually been some research on it. The studies have been small, but it seems that it does have some effect on osteoarthritis. It's not a miracle or magic bullet, but it has "modest" effects. From a journal abstract I pulled off Medline: "the American College of Rheumatology Subcommittee on Osteoarthritis believes that it is too early to issue recommendations for use. Currently, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases in collaboration with the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine have begun a pivotal study to thoroughly evaluate these agents." You can search medical journals via medline. You can usually get the abstract, once in a while the full article, and always the citation to take to your local medical library (private schools may restrict access, but public schools are yours, as a taxpayer, so you can use it) to make a copy. Sometimes you can order the articles on-line. You can get to Medline (PubMed) at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi Renee
