Re: pcos and insulin resistanceFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 19 Dec 2001 19:45:43 -0600 (CST)
Hi Teresa! 1) When you had your insulin test, was it just a one shot deal? Were you fasting? Was your blood drawn several times over a few hours after you drank a sugary drink? A regular insulin check may not show up any problems. What's called an IGTT, where you draw blood over several hours, shows the ratio of blood sugar to insulin and can be really helpful in determining insulin resistance. 2) Even if you are not IR, there is some data coming out now that shows that women with PCOS, WITHOUT IR that shows up on tests, benefit from Met. So it may help you too! I have heard as well (but only from other women on discussion boards, not from a medical source) that some OBGYN's / RE's are prescribing Met even for women who don't have PCOS at all as a drug to restore normal ovulation, and that it works! Strange to think about but there might be something to it.
