Hi!

Are you the same Liz that I just sent a personal e-mail to? Anyway, to try to answer your question - Metformin or Glucophage increases the effectiveness of insulin which is turn reduces hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia (excess androgens). Research has found that PCOS probably has to do mostly with insulin resistance. Taking a medication like Metformin has helped PCOS sufferers since it seems to get at the root of the problem.

Spironolactone is a anti-androgen. It is used to treat symptoms linked to excess androgens (hair loss, excess body hair, etc.) I have read on the post and have also heard from my doctor that it may not help with excess hair that you already have but will help with hair that may be on its way. I have read in some places in the forum that some women have seen good results with hair loss issues using Spironolactone and Metformin in combination.

What you are doing essentially by taking the two meds is attacking the root of the problem as well as symptoms caused by excess androgens. As for the weight -some women report that it is easier to lose weight while on Metformin.

Hope this helps! God bless! Tera
