for Barbra - saw palmetto and alopeciaFrom: tera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 10 Dec 2001 19:17:03 -0600 (CST)
Hi again! Started a new message the other was getting pretty long. I am taking the same dosage as you. Losing leg hair? I haven't heard of that being associated with our condition. A dermatologist may be able to help you with that since they are the skin/hair people. I will stay on the Saw Palmetto. You're right - at least it's cheap. I too am wondering why your docs don't have you on anything else for your insulin resistance. I asked my doc for a long time to start me on something for it and then I really did my research on it and then brought all of the information to one of my appts. To my excitement it did work to bring her around. Many doctors do not know the ins and outs of this condition or what the newest treatments are. I'm glad you are going to see a doc that is at least familiar with PCOS. You may still want to bring in any research you can. My advice is not to press but to give a humble presentation. In my experience some docs don't like to "learn" from their patients. But with all of the conditions and maladies out there docs can't keep up on everything! Research will also help you be able to discern what is true and what is not and my help to decipher some of the jargon! I know it gets confusing! The alopecia that your doctor was refering to is alopecia areata. This kind of alopecia causes people to have patchy baldness like you were talking about. When I was in cosmo school I had a few clients who had it and sure enough - strange bald patches while the rest of the hair seemed fine. Androgenic alopecia can cause diffuse (all over general hair loss) and pattern balding. I found a site that explains alopecia areata that is useful but I found a REALLY great site with EXCELLENT info on androgenic alopecia. It even talks about PCOS. Anyone who reads this post should definately check it out. As with any informational site or article - take the good and leave any bad. Knowledge is power with this condition. Take care, Barbra. Let us know how the appt. goes. Have a blessed holiday season. I will say a prayer on your behalf. God bless!
