Hi!

Do you have PCOS? I'm assuming that you do. Your endo told you that when you start to lose weight everything will fall into place? Our condition is not caused by weight. Weight loss and a good diet and exercise help but it will not solve the problem. Not all PCOS sufferers have a problem with weight.

Research has shown that our PCOS probably stems from insulin resistance. That's why meds such as Metformin benefit so many of us. Metformin reduces hyperinsulinemia and reduces hyperandrogenimia helping to correct our PCOS and it's symptoms from the source. When our insulin levels drop on Metformin PCOS sufferers can lose some weight, drop their blood pressure, may lose some excess body hair and hair loss may well taper off.

I do not mean to say that losing some weight will not help us. Weight loss has shown to have have some effect on androgens and for us weight loss has all of the benefits that weight loss has for people without PCOS. Some women with PCOS after losing weight start to get periods on their own. My cousin for instance who has PCOS has lost about 80 pounds (lower carbs, lower fat and calories and plenty of exercise)! Since the weight loss she has been able to get a few periods on her own which is fabulous and has an overall sense that she is in better health. I am so happy for her. But girl, she still has PCOS. I don't want to burst your bubble but she called me the other day to complain that her excess hair is so out of control she's making an appointment to have some laser treatments! (She is not taking Met, Aldactone or anything else) She is also still having difficulties with cysts and other symptoms too.

You will probably have to ask your doctor about drug combinations. Spironolactone or Aldactone that you mentioned is an anti-androgen and it may help with the excess hair over time especially if you combine it with Metformin to get at the root cause of your problems. Weight loss may help with the problem too but it will not cure it. If you do lose weight it WILL certainly be good for your body and for your mind! You are on my heart! I do hope it all works out and even though I couldn't answer all of your questions that this was somewhat helpful for you. I'm in a similar boat and I feel your pain! A good website for you: http://www.wdxcyber.com/napear02.htm. God bless! Tera
